Sandcastles on the beach, hikes on the mountains, kayaking, mountain biking and walks with the dogs. Capetonians are nature lovers and no matter if you are in the city or in the suburbs, there is just so much natural beauty to take in.

As I awake to the sounds of the Egyptian geese chattering and the sun peeking over the mountains, I am grateful to live in the most beautiful city in the world. My morning coffee is sipped as I look across the estuary, the blue waters beckoning me to join for a morning canoe.

Visitors to Cape Town often spend most of their time exploring the V&A Waterfront and take a trip to Cape Point and the penguins. But there is just so much more to see. I highly recommend spending 4 or 5 nights in Cape Town so you can immerse yourself in nature.

If you plan to hike the mountains, I would recommend taking a guide along with you. The weather can change on a dime in Cape Town, so you need to be adequately equipped. Nursery Ravine, Silvermine and Elephants Eye or Skeleton Gorge. Get your walking shoes on!

My favourite walk is from Muizenberg beach to Kalk Bay, along the seaside promenade. Mornings are best if you want to get a tan at the same time. Stop for a gelato in Kalk Bay and a browse through the cute shops. On the way back, have a swim in the tidal pool at St James.

Road and mountain bikers have plenty of options. Low and easy bike riders will enjoy the Sea Point promenade where you can potter along and gawk at the ocean. More serious bike riders (or hire an electric bike) will love the ride from the Waterfront to Hout Bay with its windy roads and hectic hills. Or head for the mountain trails at the Tokai Forest and Silvermine .

Surfers and kite surfers will enjoy the warmer waters of Muizenberg while kids play in the sand. Or the Blouberg beach with those iconic views of Table Mountain behind you. Langebaan Lagoon is a couple of hours out of town, but the very best spot for newbie kite surfers to learn the tricks of the trade.
