52 passenger’s noses were plastered against the plane windows as we flew into Victoria Falls Airport. The spray was billowing over the ravine giving us a sneak preview of the mighty Victoria Falls.
The Elephant Camp had invited me for a 2-night visit and who can say no to a free holiday …woop!
Situated on a small private reserve, butting up against the craggy cliffs of the Batoka Gorge, The Elephant Camp is about 10 minutes outside of the Victoria Falls town. As you gaze over the shrublands, a herd of elephant in the distance, you can see the spray of the Victoria Falls, like a magical cloud in an otherwise blue sky.
Elephant Camp is a 5 star luxury tented camp with large standalone tents, secluded by the indigenous bush. The canopied four poster beds, lounge area and spacious bathroom, all lead to the veranda with gorgeous views of the reserve and private plunge pools. Air-con, which really was vital in November, rounds of a well-appointed room.
In a bid to avoid honeymooners having to listen to the happy screams of playing kids, the camp is split into two completely separate areas. There is a haven for honeymooners in the one camp, with a spa, relaxing main areas and a larger communal pool. While on the other side, kids can go wild and parents can relax knowing they aren’t bothering anyone.
Meals and drinks included at Elephant Camp, you can really let go and enjoy yourself. But what really sets Elephant Camp apart is the plethora of activities on offer (and included in the price of your stay). Your guide will sit you down on arrival and discuss the options and find out what you feel like doing. The most popular activities are the guided tour of the Victoria Falls, meeting the resident herd of rescued orphan elephants, a visit to the nearby local village, nature drives on the property and sunset drinks at Batoka Gorge.
The elephants at Elephant Camp were rescued as orphans from Hwange and Mana Pools. Unable to survive by themselves in the wild, these elephants enjoy the next best thing – a private reserve to themselves and handlers to look after them. During your “walk with the elephants” activity you enjoy learning about these majestic animals and getting up close and personal. Often they will approach you for a sniff or to see if you have a treat in your pocket for them!
Also included while at Elephant Camp is lunch at the famous and newly rebuilt Lookout Café, which sports dramatic views of the Victoria Falls Gorge. The perfect place to while away a few hours.
Elephant Camp is a top choice in Victoria Falls and perfect for those wanting lots to do, but also plenty of luxury and pampering. I loved it.
